On Sunday, July 24, 1824, a Baptist congregation was organized in Little Rock with Silas T. Toncray as pastor.  Worship services were held in a log house on Third Street between Main and Scott.  The congregation voted on July 4, 1832, to give up the name of Baptists and to adopt the name Christian only.  This followed the lead of other churches primarily in Kentucky and Pennsylvania, led by Alexander Campbell and Barton W. Stone.

Brother W. W. Stevenson, a former Cumberland Presbyterian minister was called as pastor and served until 1849.  During his ministry the Town-Clock Church (a landmark for many years) was built on Scott Street between Third and Fourth, and was first occupied on September 14, 1845.  Alexander Campbell in his trips through this section had frequent visits with the congregation.

In 1887, after considerable growth in the congregation, a brick church was built at the site at Tenth and Louisiana Streets.  The congregation prospered and in 1908 rebuilt on the Tenth and Louisiana Streets location.  An education building was erected in the fall of 1950.

A study committee and advisory group were appointed in 1957.  These two made a careful analysis of the church site at Tenth and Louisiana, and made a study of the residential location of the active members and of the growth trend of the City of Little Rock.  A building site committee was appointed in the fall of 1958, which recommended the purchase of the site containing ten and three-tenths acres, at 1500 North Mississippi Avenue.  The property was purchased May, 1959.

On May 21, 1961, we broke ground for the erection of an interim sanctuary and administrative offices, a c hildren's building, and a youth-adult building.  All buildings were completed March 1, 1962, and our first church services were held there on March 4, 1962.

Our church is conveniently located in the center of Little Rock, easily accessible from major streets and highways.  Our facilities are free of stairs and other impediments for those with handicaps.  Trained personnel are available to care for pre-school children during worship and church meetings.  The church's weekday Pre-school has been recognized for years as a positive, caring place for young children.  First Christian's weekly Food Pantry has served the poor and hungry of our community for more than ten years.

First Christian Church is a congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a denomination with a long heritage of openness to other Christian traditions.  Many of our members came to First Christian because of its emphasis on living by New Testament faith and practices, particularly the unity all believers have in Jesus Christ.  The strength of our congregation comes from our members, and we have a long tradition of positive involvement in our community.
